There was no one around and the horses slowly grazed towards us before daybreak and after. Minutes after this photo, the alpha male slowly walked between us and the horses seen, stood with his body as a shield and female and young colts walked behind him to reach new grass. It was like watching a school crossing guard at work. A morning, I will never forget. I kept walking around the school photographing up close and then wider-angle photos. I could not capture what the scene was telling me, but this second to last image spoke to what I felt there. The trees stand as windbreaks against the school. There is a sense of history and also loneliness of times past. Notice the grass and trees bending to the left from wind during the rain. One of my favorites for the memory. I had just passed the summit heading down Owl Creek Pass Road, when a country girl, with only her dog, was moving cattle down the thick forested road. She backed her horse to my car to ask if I was in a hurry and that she was moving the cattle to a meadow down the road. "Not in a hurry and no worries" I replied. I watched her and her dog skillfully climb up and down the mountain slope to bring in strays and push forward until successfully reaching the meadow. It was a great afternoon of observing someone and their dog who were both excellent at their profession. If one was to make California or Oregon before winter, travelers wanted to be here no later than around July 4th. Nicknamed the "Register of the Desert" for thousands of pioneer names and dates carved on the rock. Many are still visible today.
