Independence Rock
Central Wyoming
Independence Rock was an important landmark for Oregon Trail pioneers. If one was to make California or Oregon before winter, travelers wanted to be here no later than around July 4th. Nicknamed the "Register of the Desert" for thousands of pioneer names and dates carved on the rock. Many are still visible today. October 5, 2025. Photo © copyright by Gary Silvey.
